At Athma Kalari, residential Kalaripayattu training in Kerala costs ₹16,000 for 2 weeks, ₹25,500 for 1 month and ₹51,000 for 2 months. Each price includes training twice a day, a stay in our basic option (the dormitory) and 3 vegetarian meals a day.
Kalaripayattu training fees in Kerala vary a lot, and the reason is simple. When you live in, you are not only paying for classes. You also pay for your room, your food and your teacher's time, twice a day, 6 days a week.
This guide explains what decides the price, lists our real fees, and shows the extra costs people often forget.
What decides the price of Kalaripayattu training
Most of the difference between 2 fees comes down to 6 things.
Local classes or a residential stay
Many towns in Kerala have evening classes for local students. These usually cost much less per month, because you sleep and eat at home. You also train for a shorter time each day.
A residential stay costs more because it includes your stay and meals. You also train morning and evening, so you get far more hours with the teacher in the same month.
How long you stay
A longer stay costs more in total, but often less per day. At Athma Kalari, 2 weeks cost ₹16,000 and 1 month costs ₹25,500. So the second 2 weeks cost only ₹9,500 more.
Room type
Our program prices include the dormitory. You can also choose a single hut, a single or private room, a deluxe room, or an apartment 1.5 km away with stable Wi-Fi. A different room changes the total, so ask for the price of the room you want before you book. You can see all the options on our rooms and stay page.
Food
3 South Indian vegetarian meals a day are part of every residential price. You do not need a separate budget for daily meals.
Treatments
Kalari treatments and massages are not part of the training fee. Many students add a short package of 75-minute sessions while they train:
- Relax, 3 days, ₹6,800: daily Uzhichil and Kizhi, with steam on alternate days.
- Destress, 5 days, ₹11,500: daily Uzhichil, Dhara on 3 days, Kizhi on 2 and steam on 2.
- Kalari Conditioning, 7 days, ₹15,400: daily Uzhichil and Kizhi, steam on alternate days and 1 traction session.
Treatment for a specific condition, such as back or neck pain, depends on the plan Ashan Vipin Das makes after he examines you. Message us for a price.
Teacher training
Teacher training is a longer commitment, so it is priced by the month. Our teacher training courses cost ₹45,000 a month for the 4-month Kalari TTC and ₹50,000 a month for the 5-month Advanced TTC.

Hidden costs to plan for
The program fee is the biggest cost, but it is not the only one. Plan for these too.
- Getting here. The gurukulam is near Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district. Calicut Airport is 46 km away, Kochi Airport 115 km and Coimbatore Airport 128 km. Pattambi station is 18 km away and Shoranur 31 km.
- Cab fares. Cabs by sedan have fixed fares: ₹2,500 from Calicut Airport and ₹1,000 from Pattambi station.
- Training cloth. The Kalari Uduthuketti costs ₹1,250. You can buy it before you come or on arrival.
- Clothes and kit. Bring 3–4 sets of loose practice clothes, a blanket, towels, and knee or ankle support if you need it.
- Treatments. If you want them, packages start at ₹6,800 for 3 days.
- Small personal costs. Phone data, snacks and trips on your Sundays off.
Is a residential stay worth the cost?
It depends on your goal. If you live near a local kalari and can train for years, evening classes are a good and low-cost path.
If you live far away, or you want to make real progress in a short time, living in makes sense. You train about 4 to 5 hours a day, eat at set times and rest between sessions. A month at the gurukulam gives you far more hours of training than a month of evening classes.
If you are not sure yet, the 7-day online workshop costs ₹2,600 and teaches the warm-up, Vandanam, 4 kicks, footwork and Vadivu. It is a low-cost way to see if Kalari is for you.
