A Kalaripayattu teacher training course prepares a committed student to lead classes safely and correctly. At Athma Kalari, the path is 1 month of Kalari Parijaya, then the 4-month Kalari TTC, and then, by invitation, the 5-month Advanced TTC.

Teacher training is not a short cut to becoming a master. In Kalari, learning the art fully takes decades. A teacher training course gives you a strong base, a method for teaching, and your teacher's word that you are ready to start.

This guide explains who the course is for, what each stage covers, what it costs, and what a Kalari certificate really means.

Who teacher training is for

Teacher training suits people who already love the practice and want to share it. For example:

  • Students who have trained at Athma Kalari and want to go deeper.
  • Yoga, dance, movement or fitness teachers who want to teach Kalari basics with real roots.
  • People who plan to train for years and want a clear structure.

You do not need to be young or flexible to start. You need to be willing, physically able and ready to train twice a day for months.

The path to becoming a Kalari teacher

  1. Kalari Parijaya, 1 month. Everyone starts here, at Athma Kalari, even if you have trained elsewhere. It builds the shared base: warm-up, Vandanam and Vadivu, 8 kicks, 2 footwork patterns, Meypayattu and more.
  2. Kalari TTC, 4 months. You keep training and learn teaching technique.
  3. Advanced TTC, 5 months. By invitation after Kalari TTC. It adds practical sessions on basic and common Kalari treatments.

There are no fixed batches, so you can begin Kalari Parijaya on the day you arrive.

What Kalari TTC covers

Kalari TTC focuses on teaching technique. You keep training at the gurukulam, so your own practice grows. At the same time you learn to stand on the other side of the class: to lead, watch and correct.

Ask us for the month-by-month plan before you join. The aim is simple. By the end, you should be able to teach the basics clearly and safely.

What Advanced TTC adds

Kalari and Kalari Chikitsa, its healing side, have always gone together. A traditional teacher looks after students' bodies as well as their training. Advanced TTC adds practical sessions on basic and common treatments:

  • Kalari leg massage.
  • Kizhi, the heated herbal bundles.
  • Medicinal bandaging.
  • For advanced students, Chavitti Uzhichil, the foot pressure massage.

These sessions teach care for common training strains. They do not make you a doctor. Anyone with a recent fracture, severe or sudden pain, numbness, fever, pregnancy or recent surgery should see a doctor first.

What a Kalari certificate means

This part is important, so we say it plainly.

A certificate from a traditional gurukulam is the teacher's word. It says that Ashan Vipin Das trained you, watched you for the full course, and believes you are ready for this step. It carries the weight of his lineage: he is the 8th generation of a Valluvanad Kalari family, with 29 years of practice.

It is not a government licence, and it is not a university degree. It does not make you a "master". Traditionally, a student's right to teach came from the teacher's blessing, and that is still the heart of it.

If you plan to teach in a gym, studio or another country, check their rules first. Some places ask for their own insurance or fitness qualifications on top of your Kalari training.

How you earn it

  • You complete the full months of the course. Teacher training cannot be shortened.
  • You keep at least 90% attendance. This rule applies to moving up any level and to every certificate.
  • You show, in practice, that you can do what a teacher must do.

What a Kalari teacher must be able to do

A certificate is a starting point. In daily class, a good Kalari teacher should be able to:

  • Perform the syllabus they teach cleanly, with good posture and control.
  • Lead the warm-up and the Vandanam in the correct order.
  • Give the commands in Malayalam and explain them in simple words.
  • See a mistake in a student's knee, hip or back, and correct it before it causes harm.
  • Adjust the work for age, fitness and injuries, and know when a student should stop.
  • Keep the customs of the kalari, and treat it with respect.
  • Be honest about what they know, and keep learning from their own teacher.

How long until you can really teach?

After about 5 months, you can teach beginners the basics you have learned. That is valuable. Many people only ever need a teacher for the basics.

Teaching weapons, advanced forms and treatment takes many more years of training under a teacher. Ashan Vipin Das has practised for 29 years, and he says learning Kalari fully takes decades. Plan for teacher training as the start of a long road, not the end of it. Our article on how long it takes to learn Kalaripayattu explains the stages in more detail.
